NATIONAL CIDER WEEK FOUNDER

Glynwood is a 501(c)3 not for profit based in Cold Spring, NY whose mission is to strengthen the regional food system. We do this through a number of innovative programs that serve farmers and others, while also working our own 250-acre farm. Glynwood's Apple Project, which includes Cider Week, is working to enhance the viability of regional orchards by encouraging the production of hard cider and apple spirits.

Appalachia is home to more apple varieties than the rest of the country combined, legacy of a bygone era when mountain settlers experimented with fruit trees in relative isolation. According to Gary Nabhan, an Arizona-based conservation biologist, sustainable agriculture activist, and “scholar in residence” during Virginia’s first annual Cider Week, the American apple is inextricably linked to the area.

Each week before Thanksgiving is designated as “Virginia Cider Week,” where cider makers and industry supporters take part in events around the state, particularly the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, in an effort to boost the profile of Virginia ciders and the people who produce them.
